I can't think of a single great coach from the modern era who wasn't more than .500 against the good teams. Bear Bryant, considered the greatest college football coach of all-time, was something like 17-22-1 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in his 25 seasons at Alabama.

Pat dye was 11-5-1 against top ten teams from 1983-1990.

And that was without having superior talent every time he set foot on the field.

I suspect tubs had a winning record as well if you throw out the first two seasons at AU like we did with saban. Not sure though as I haven't checked.

And 11-14-1 throughout his entire career at Auburn.

But I don't throw out the first season with Saban.

Saban was 0-2 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2007.

He was 1-2 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2008.

He was 3-0 agains teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2009

He was 0-2 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2010

He was 2-1 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2011

He was 2-1 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2012

He was 0-2 against teams that finished in the Top 10 in 2013

For a grand total record of 8-11 against teams that finished in the Top 10 from 2007-Present. Which is right on par with Bryant and Dye.

Well, I typed out a long response and phone ate it so summary...

Dye in a comparable position coaching a stable program wad much better than saban. 9/14 losses against top ten teams came in his first and last two years when AUs program was in bad shape.
