The University is a public institution the Athletic Department is not. I graduated from there just two years ago, and I know the school was very proud of being the only Athletic department to be funded and ran this way. They are essentially their own private business.

Just about every SEC athletic dept is separate from its university, but that doesn't mean you don't have to comply with freedom of info act requests.

Correct.

So is UK's Athletic Department. Tennessee is not the only one. UKAA actually gives the University money.

A brief overview on how the UT AD is run.

Interesting note in there, UT is the highest taxed athletic department in the country.

I believe all/most public university athletic departments are ran this way... Hence you have the $4 million plus coaching salaries... I believe there would be an uproar if public funding was used to support coaching raises,etc....

That link I posted lists other SEC schools and it clearly states Auburn recieves over 5 million dollars of state funding annually.

TouchdownTn, and UT recieves $1 million... It doesn't matter though, because we would have to dissect the balance sheet of each athletic department to see where these funds ultimately end up...
