First I've ever heard of a school getting a trophy for losing their bowl game

The 1970 National Champion was, and is NEBRASKA.

64 was shared between Arky, Bama, and ND.
73 was shared between Bama and ND.

(Psst... Gator. I realize that. I'm trying to get Major Aggie to say it wasn't Alabama because they lost their bowl game both of those years.)

1964 = Arkansas
1973 = Notre Dame

When in doubt, use overall record as tiebreaker (including bowl result) when the major polls are split.

The AP used to pick their champion before the bowl games into the late 60's. The Coaches did it until the 74 season.

Still waiting for the legitimate DISPUTE to the 1919 and 1927 titles. In reality, we should include the 1917 season as well (unbeaten and unscored upon)

Arky only got the FWAA (Grantland Rice trophy) in 64. Bama got the AP and Coaches, while ND got the NFF (MacArthur trophy).
Bama got the Coaches in 73.

Lol. Why does A&M have some loyalty to defending Alabama? I don't like Alabama, and neither do Aggies. They are our division rivals...

Still waiting on why your school officially claims two division titles (one of which the team didn't go to the conference title game) as "conference championships."

You will also notice that the poll names that are not italicized following Illinois and Notre Dame in 1927 were actually...

get this...

polls taken in 1927 and not decades after (Dickinson and Houlgate). ETA: Shall I say, polls "conducted."

It's lame to claim titles retroactively like that anyhow. And no, "not everyone does it." Ohio St doesn't, OU doesn't, Miami, Nebraska doesn't, Texas doesn't, LSU doesn't, and we don't.

Edit: 1927 is really stretching it, isn't SR the Sagarin Ratings? lol that was done in the 1980's...

I don't think ND does either.

Arky, Auburn, LSU, and UF are the only ones in the SEC who don't.

And the ironic thing is that Notre Dame doesn't claim 1927 as one of their national titles. Though I believe they claim a retroactive title in 1924.

All of those schools you listed, with the exception of Texas, really didn't make noise on the national scene until after 1950. No need to claim titles retroactively when the AP and the UPI are regarded as the standard by that time.
