I followed Malzahn as a HS coach. He is incredible.

He won the Rivals OC of the Year at Arkansas, one year out of HS. It was also Gus, not Nutt, that brought the wildcat formation from Springdale HS.

He then won his 2nd straight OC of the year after Tulsa led the nation in offense last year. Tulsa follows up this year with the nations #2 offense.

Auburn WILL NOT huddle. Auburn WILL snap the ball within 5 seconds of the ball being marked and the whistle blown. It will be a 2 min drill the entire game.

Auburn made one hell of a hire.

While I think it would be fun to watch I hardly doubt Auburn will do much of what Malzahn wants to do.

It will be just like Arkansas all over again.

It will have some of Malzahn's touches (wildcat, speed sweeps, inventive running game) but they won't be running his true offense.

Not too mention they have to find someone to run it and someone to catch it.

Good luck.

Exactly.

I hope they enjoy running that offense with the scrubs that currently comprise their "team."

Auburn is not built for the spread.

Arkansas didn't run his offense because Nutt didn't want to hire him in the first place. Nutt let Malzahn hang onto a few plays and implement them at Nutt's will.

Arkansas definitely did not run the "Hurry up, No huddle" that Gus ran in HS, wrote a book on, and ran the past two years at Tulsa.

If Cheeze-it doesn't want a hurry up-no huddle offense, why did he hire him? Gus's offensive success is based on that offensive scheme.

I say Auburn runs it. They would not have hired him otherwise, IMHO.

I agree. They're much better suited for the "bend it over" than the "spread."

Just look at their season finale.

The "Hurry up, no huddle" does not have to be a spread offense!

Why is that so hard for some of you? It can be run from the wishbone if you please.

Gus prefers a spread offense but his bread and butter is lengthening the game by snapping the ball within five seconds of the ball being marked.

The spread and "hurry up, no huddle" can and will be mutually exclusive if need be.

Jesus Christ.

probably a lot less effective, though. You don't try to lengthen a game and then run a hard nosed offense. That would be liking fricking for virginity.

Which is great when you are actually scoring points and getting yards. In my opinion it's built more for teams that are at a disadvantage in personnel.

Outside of getting as many snaps possible the hurry up also looks to confuse a defense or to at least make them think. It's easier to do this out of the spread because it's easier to get to many more formations. This differs from the wishbone or any other offense.

In the spread I can go from empty to two back in less than 5 seconds. If I'm in another offense I might have to make substitutions to do this.

So what is to be gained from hiring Malzahn if you aren't going to run his offense?

In Gus's two seasons at Tulsa, Tulsa ran the ball one (1) more time than they passed.

That is picture perfect balance. Maybe it isn't "hard nosed" but it points to an OC that has ended #1 and #2 in offense using an exact 50/50 split of running and passing.

Point being, you can in fact lengthen the game using the hurry up, no huddle without being a pass factory.

Exactly and gauranteed. We learned a lesson this year. If we were not gonna run his O we would not have hired him. Tubs assistant coaches provided opposition that doomed Franklin from the start. That will not be an issue now. And before we started losing some recruits, we had the fastest class in the nation, heavy will smaller faster spread guys. This was a very good hire.

+1

But that doesn't mean it's going to work. See Auburn 2008.
