Guessing it's just a contraction of the Middle and Early Modern English variant "olde" where, in typical Southern fashion, they drop that last consonant. OM fans do love their Renaissance Faires, right?

Just saw an ESPN article on it. Apparently even Tennessee managed to get a vote from the AP (I'll take that as a 'respect/good job' vote) -- surprised the hell out of me.
