We all know that there are teams that can beat a better team with good planning and execution, not to mention a little good luck in terms of penalties, fumbles, and interceptions. The other intangible is when the referees make bad calls or fail to make appropriate calls.
Brings to mind how Miami simply needed to take a knee to win against Georgia Tech but instead handed the ball off to runner who was trying to gain over 100 yards.
