Alabama only claimed 6 NCs in 1983. You didn't have 6, but you claimed that many. For the sake of argument we'll say you did have 6.

Since 1983 Alabama has won 7 legitimate NCs.

-historical recognition: he believed that Alabama's earlier football successes deserved formal recognition. He added five pre-Bryant national championships (1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, and 1941) to the university's media guide.

All pre-poll era claims are as sketchy as all other claims to the same.

- Competitive Positioning: he aimed to bolster the program's prestige and historical significance.

Partly a response to other schools that had also claimed disputed titles from the early years of college football.

- Boosting Program Image: he stated that he wanted UA to "look the best it could look." Welcome to the media age

It was a shite attempt to claim more prominence from an era that was more mythical than any in awarding NCs.
