So we called them tu for "the university" to make fun of their arrogance.
They went by Texas University all on their own first of all.
Then when they started trying to push themselves as "The University Of Texas" that's when we started the "tu" thing.
Their response to that is "tu must be short for the university" which is just more of their arrogance.
That's not what it stands for and don't let them tell you that, that's just their spin on it to make them feel better. Aggies don't ever call them "the university of texas" because they don't represent us or what most Texans stand for.

My God you folks are dense. From the State of Texas Archives. Somebody needs to amend Fish Camp training so that they begin to tell the truth.

The idea for the University of Texas had its roots in the Republic of Texas era, but the tumultuous problems of early statehood, the Civil War, and Reconstruction kept anything from actually being done for decades. In 1871, the legislature established Texas A&M College, which was to emphasize agricultural and engineering studies with a strong military bent. The Constitution of 1876 specified the creation of a "University of Texas" that would teach literature and the arts and sciences.
Finally, in 1881, Austin was chosen in an election as the site for the university, with Galveston selected for the medical branch. A board of regents was appointed by Governor Roberts. This proclamation calls for the regents to have their first meeting in Austin on November 15, 1881

What does any of that have to do with A&M that was created 7 years before tu?

Actually the dismal performance for years after Bear Bryant was due to being an all military school and that Grand Old Gentleman of College football the Bear. No one talks about it , but he is still the only Division I coach in history to admit that he did it. The probation he left us with when he left was the equivalent of the SMU death penalty at the time. Quotes at his departure- "Of course I did it. How else was I going to get football players at this one horse college" & "I'm going to the SEC where no one squeals" & "I am leaving this program with what it had when I got here; A few dusty old helmets"

Damn you are slow. What does a bunch of docs about the formation of Texas have to do with anything? What does a Constitution that was amended before that clause was implemented have to do with anything? A&M and Texas were only considered to be joined in the beginning but that never came to pass. They are independent schools with their own systems, both of which are huge outside of the already large main campuses.
A&M and Texas were set up with different missions and they still are to an extent, though both schools have moved into areas of the other school's original purpose now. This is especially the case with A&M that has a top flight business school and an excellent Liberal Arts school including a Presidential Library just as Texas has a Presidential Library. They are both Tier 1 Public Universities and both have enormous endowments, Texas being the largest amongst Publics and A&M being 4th.

well that's false.
all the original Big8 school had that unique moniker.
OU, CU, OSU, NU, ISU, KU, KSU, MU.
OSU was Oklahoma A&M and called Oklahoma Aggies
KSU was Kansas State College and was Kansas Aggies.
In Colorado, Colorado was Colorado University and Colorado State (Colorado A&M) was Colorado Aggies.
