Alabama and Auburn both went to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 as well. 2022 will probably only be the 2nd time since that year that we both are in the NCAA Tournament (2018 being the other).

Their first game as #1 was against Utah with Urban Meyer in attendance. #CSB

What are the chances all in the state of Alabama?

I think technically we played Moorhead State or something first, but yea we didn't even make it through the week before we lost in Salt Lake to Utah
We then came home and beat #19 Xavier a few days later, coached by Thad Matta and led by David West but then lost on the road at terrible Vanderbilt before losing on the road to terrible Ole Miss and then to terrible Arkansas.
So, basically, this season.

Auburn has actually been down this road before.
Let me take you back to 1998....
Following a narrow loss in the SECCG the season before, Terry Bowden's unlikely career as Auburn football coach is unraveling. The team looks terrible and has effectively quit, on it's way to a 3-8 season. The lockerroom is lost, not helped by the fact that one of our assistant coaches punched an OL in the face breaking his jaw. Little Terry is hitting up the bars frequently and screwing any girl he can get his hands on. On top of that our recruiting class is a disaster, comprising mostly kids that no other school would touch with a 10 foot pole (including several who would get arrested for serious charges). Amid rumors he will be fired at the end of the season, he meets with AD and demands a pledge of job security. AD says nope, so Bowden quits in the middle of the season (unheard of in those days). The media runs hit piece after hit piece, dredging up old wounds and insisting Auburn is the last place any respectable coach should ever go.
Meanwhile Cliff Ellis' basketball team is rolling with a talented and well rounded roster. By February they are 25-1 and ranked # 2 in the country. They aren't simply winning games they are dominating and putting up highlight reel plays. The arena is packed every night with "Cliff Dwellers" and a long dormant program is suddenly one of the toughest road environments in basketball. They are the toast of the town and everybody has momentarily forgotten about the woes of the football program.
