Now, 1971 was a different era, but its odd to think how this game against Southern Cal in the Coliseum was on a Friday night and not on televison. Also its hard to imagine today keeping a change to the Wishbone basically a secret all summer. Still, Bear and Alabama beat John McKay and Southern Cal, 17-10 and went unbeaten in the regular season and were off to the races.

Damn, all considered, that's a pretty badass picture.

This might start another white helmet debate.

Which has best odds to re-emerge, even if only for a brief appearance in a single game, at Bama:

These days? Probably white helmets. I hope it never happens but with the crowd today who has no respect for tradition and with a fetish for Power Ranger football unis, it is absolutely amazing this hasn't been tried yet.

Pretty sure they have had a wishbone formation on the goal line several years under Saban. Obviously not the real thing though, but I'll still go with that happening before white helmets under Saban
