QB Matt Corral decommits Gators for Ole Miss; Dan Mullen scrambles to find his guy
(Chris Hays / Orlando Sentinel)
Five days before the new early National Signing Day, Florida has lost the commitment of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly quarterback Matt Corral. The decommitment means the Gators could be scrambling to sign an upper-tier quarterback, even during the late signing period, which begins Feb. 7.
Corral, the No. 1-ranked pro-style passer in the country according to 247Sports, has flipped his commitment to Ole Miss. Losing Corral to another SEC school does not bode well for the Gators current situation, although it does not appear as if new Florida head coach Dan Mullen has made Corral a priority.
Pro-style passers aren’t necessarily the type of quarterbacks that fit into Mullen’s offensive philosophy and the former Mississippi State head coach could have other targets in mind.
Quarterback was a position of issue this past season and Mullen will be looking to resurrect an offense that was led, for the most part, by Feleipe Franks during the Gators just-completed 4-7 campaign. Florida ranked No. 111 of 129 Football Bowl Subdivision programs last season in total offense, and ranked No. 100 in passing offense and No. 79 in rushing offense. Mullen’s former team ranked No. 45 in total offense, No. 14 in rushing and No. 108 in passing.
Justin Fields, Georgia commit (Chris Hays / Orlando Sentinel)
Mullen’s style — and likewise for recently-hired quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson — favors an athletic quarterback with a tough mentality and ability to both run and throw the football, like Tim Tebow from his former days at UF, or like Dak Prescott, the former Mississippi State quarterback now with the NFL Dallas Cowboys.
One of Mullen’s first stops after being hired as new Gators’ head coach was to gauge the interest of Justin Fields, the No. 1-ranlekd dual-threat quarterback in the country by 247Sports. Fields, a Kennesaw (Ga.) Harrison product, committed to Georgia over Florida and a few others in October.
UF could still be trying to flip his choice, countering with the thought that the Bulldogs are a College Football Playoff semifinalist with a true freshman quarterback in Jake Fromm and a true sophomore back-up quarterback in Jacob Eason.
Florida does have a campus visit lined up for this weekend with Ohio State commit Emory Jones, the No. 4-ranked dual-threat QB out of Franklin (Ga.) Heard County.
Wyatt Rector, Leesburg (Aileen Perilla / Orlando Sentinel)
The top 10 dual-threat quarterbacks in the country are currently committed to other programs and only three of the top 30 are still undecided, which includes Leesburg quarterback Wyatt Rector, who passed for more than 3,000 yards this past season while also rushing for more than 1,000. Rector does not have a Gators offer but would commit on the spot if Mullen were to reach out.
Rector is in Dallas to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Game on Monday
The other two uncommitted quarterbacks in the 247Sports Top 30 are Gary Bohanon of Earle (Ark.) and James Foster of Montgomery (Ala.) Lanier.
Mullen could go the juco route and he has extended a scholarship offer to Terry Wilson, the No. 2-ranked junior college quarterback out of Garden City (Kan.) Community College. Wilson, however, committed to Kentucky this past Sunday.
The Gators currently have just 12 committed players in their 2018 recruiting class.
