Mateer's decision making bothers me as much if not more than his arm angles. That's a part of his game he needs to develop, and I think he will.
I know a lot of people are raving about Bentley, but I think it's a mistake to place him ahead of Newbauer at this point. Newbauer is a big dude with a cannon for an arm. Bentley may be closer to Mateer in terms of the style of his game, but I'm hearing Newbauer is the fastest of the three. He can be a problem in the open field.

The challenge in NIL era is Bentley will likely be a good QB. But if we keep him buried on depth he’ll leave after season. I think the coaches are hoping neither needs any meaningful snaps.

Our offense will be different this year. The TE room will be really improved. I think we run more. Basically we added many more plays to our playbook by having a quality TE room and coach. And they are protecting the RBs in practice for a long season.

Arbuckle has a complete cycle this time around. And more weapons. OLine is experienced. I think Mateer will go off this year. WR room is better too.

You're definitely right about the TE's, and yes, the running game seems to have more energy and explosiveness.

I think Bentley knew he'd be behind Mateer at least for a while. Probably the whole season. He's not, to your point, expecting to be behind anyone else. That would put him at risk.

To keep Bentley we will likely need to keep him 2nd on depth. Even if that 3rd qb is better. Better to upset 3rd than 2nd. But all camp reports show Bentley doing great.

As for the other qb running skills, we need a thinking/passing qb. And then run only when needed. Some running qbs run too early in decision tree and you miss wrs open. Thats the challenge to a running qb.

If Mateer gets hurt we are likely done for season aspirations anyways. Lets hope he stays healthy and gets his mojo back

I do not think all our eggs are in Mateer's basket. Our coaches should have 1 or 2 or more guys ready to play. But the rest of the offense would have to play exceptionally well to carry a young QB. Maybe I have crimson colored glasses, but I could see that happening.

Brandon Drumm
@Bdrumm_Rivals

A few things from #Sooners practice today:

— I got a RIDICULOUS catch from Mackenzie Alleyne on our video camera that we will put out soon.

One-handed grab with DB in fantastic position. Dude can ball.

— Ryan Fodje back at it.

— Watching the #OU defensive staff coach is a work of art. Development. Development. Development. So thorough in all they do.

— John Mateer and Bowe Bentley look very smooth.

— Jonathan Hatton Jr continues to impress a lot as a FR running back.

— FR TE Tyler Ruxer put a few DB/LBs in a spin cycle in one-on-one’s and FR WR Jayden Petit is a crisp route-runner with great body control for a player his size.

I hope he wins but have no faith he will. They let NBA players come back and 15 minutes of rugby will likely be his defeat. Will make no sense because he never claimed his injury year.
