Hate his career got off the rails due to injury, but good luck to him and his new team, wherever he lands

SoonerKeith
@SoonerKeith1

Seems like today is the day coaches met with at least some players about their future in the program. Hard to believe all these guys decided, on the same day, to jump into the portal. Processing in progress…

Lets all reflect. We fans get to know players. But we also want to win it all. We had a team this year but lacked in some areas.

Next year our defense will be better. Year after we’ll lose key players to NFL. So we need to make hay in 2026.

It means we have to go all in and use money wisely. Thats what we see now, most are having talks and realizing its best to move on.

We then have freed up money we can use to bring in good value players. We are only seeing the departures but starting Fri we’ll see the newcomers. So keep it all in perspective.

Also, keep in mind that due to our early playoff loss has given plentiful time for staff to search for those gems. Other teams playing later bowls have less time.

Related to this lets look at last season. We played a bowl game close to portal opening day. That means we had way less time to vet players like Ott. Due to time constraints we had to take him or lose him. This left little time to talk to coaches to see if he had any issues. We ended up paying good money that was wasted. This year we’ve had ample time to do vetting and will find some playmakers. Not all will stick out but I think Nagy and crew will find some gems.

Related is when you play late then your players haven’t all decided if going to portal so its last minute scrambling to find replacements when they do. You don’t have time to sit down and do interviews and have tough discussions either. Because of how the portal dates run it hurts teams playing within 4-5 days before it opens.

Its just about Nagy time. Hope he knows what he’s doing. Having NFL experience he knows what to look for in players who can produce. Has had time to evaluate. Now its about time to perform.

Nothing in rumor mill so far

All I heard was with Hawkins leaving that meant Mateer was coming back. Nothing official yet but all signs say staying

If Hawkins is gone and all we have is Mateer and Bowe Bentley, who is not even on campus yet.. shouldn't they be looking for a QB? I'd love to have Austin Simmons or anyone who can legit push Mateer for the starting position. Not saying I am down on Mateer per se, but he needs to be pushed, dude makes too many mistakes

Agree. I do think we have another qb but can’t recall his name. Lee or Jet Ni or something like that

If this staff does not get a decent portal backup qb then we are cooked and so are they. It would be a travesty to build a whole team and not have a backup qb. We also have to assume Bently will redshirt

Perspective on starts by playoff teams (recruits vs portal players)

Top 4 with most recruit starts are bounced. Still think recruiting matters but not like it used to. Means we have less slots to fill. Those heavy on portals have to hit jackpot every year where more recruit dependent can survive a bad portal year easier.

Its a whole new football world

Good to remember, we did great in last years portal. With even more time this year should be even better
