Likely didn’t want to come in and change system knowing how hard that is in one year.
And didn’t want to run BV’s system either, knowing its harder to run it while you have your own.

If one looks at it on a bigger level it was never a fit for the timeline we have. We must win this year and can running BV defense. JK would have been good in long run but not short run.

And we’d have paid over $3m for him to be a mostly lame duck DC.

On surface it looked good, for image and a great D mind. But not for the timeline

His alleged fiancée is a nasty-looking trollop with undeniable baggage. The guys got poor judgement, let’s move on

Ok sure... but... anybody else just a bit concerned though that the Big Ten seems to be able to outspend SEC teams for players and coaches?

I don’t think it was an outspend deal. He is from Penn and likely wanted to go there. He reached out to OU and his rep likely helped him plan this to get max money.

OU likely knew he wasn’t coming here a week ago and should have just said they have cut off all discussions to save face.

He had some type of beef with his HC and wanted to go to Penn since he’s from there. Don’t think this was about them having more money at all.

We are better off not going with him in the short run. He won’t have the players at PSU he had at tOSU either

I think we may have dodged a bullet here to be honest.

The #Sooners are expected to hire Arkansas State DC Nate Dreiling to coach linebackers, sources confirm to https://OUInsider.com.

The expectation is that Brent Venables himself will call defensive plays in 2025.

quote:

Dreiling had previously been the DC and interim head coach at Utah State before joining the Arkansas State staff.

To clarify, he never coached at Arkansas State. He joined them in early Jan this year. He coached at Utah State in 2024.

Here’s a note I found from last year by one of their beat writers:

Nate Dreiling just gets it

(He was at NMS prior to US)

Josh McCuistion
@Josh_Scoop

The stat I keep coming back to, in his first year at New Mexico State he led a defense that prior to his arrival was the No. 129 SP+ defense to No. 43 in the same metric.

That is a seismic jump in one year.

Keep in mind Knowles reached out to OU and of course that was entertained. But he did it to get more money from PS. Nate was always being explored so is not a fly by night decision.

@GeorgeStoia

At 34 years old, Dreiling has risen the coaching ranks quickly. Served as the interim head coach at Utah State last year and was the DC at New Mexico State the two years prior to that.

He is also the son of Kansas high school football coaching legend Randy Dreiling.

The benefit of unlimited analysts, it would appear. The Sooners will have, in effect, a bonus coach on staff beyond the typical 11 countable coaches.

Offense: Arbuckle, Murray, Bedenbaugh, Jones, Finley

Defense: Bates, Chavis, Hall, Valai, Venables, Dreiling, Goodwin
