Following a four-year, $40 million investigation – the longest in the history of the National Transportation Safety Board – board officials concluded an electrical failure ignited fuel vapors in a nearly empty tank in the belly of the jet.

On the day of the crash, witnesses said they saw a streak of light near the plane and one or more explosions near the aircraft. Speculation bloomed that the crash had been touched off by a proximity-triggered rocket, missile or flare.

The day after the crash, the possibility that an explosive device was fired toward the plane or placed inside before takeoff took hold. The Federal Bureau of Investigation considered potential terrorist links and began a criminal investigation.

You should check out The Flight Channel on YT if you haven't already.

Really well made reenactments about LOTS of aircraft incidents.

Wait WHAT???? It just took off and was going to make a cross Atlantic flight. I don't remember what they ruled but if this is it, that's just retarded.....level 10 retarded.

A flight to Europe isn't a big deal. From New York London is six hours away, and Italy another 90ish minutes. Every 777 I've taken from Houston to Europe was for sure not full of gas, the flight is 20-30% shorter than a flight to Japan, it wouldn't make sense to carry the same amount of gas.

True. Longest flight I've ever taken was Charlotte > LAX > Sydney > Melbourne.. good lord I never thought I'd see the ground again lol

Total was something like 18 hours ++
