I think it really just comes down to individual preference.
I don't like JD either, but I do like Jim Beam, which I'm sure some people detest.
Much "better" bourbons and scotches are good to me too, but not all of them.
Basically, all this to say, in my experience price or rarity is not an indicator of taste (at least to me), so I just end up with whatever I enjoy and don't really worry about it.
As a side note, same with beer — I love just about every type of craft beer imaginable, but can be just as content drinking a cold PBR in the right situation. Everybody's taste is just different.

Crown royal isn’t pretentious it’s for try hards.
Pretentious is buying 200 dollar or more bottles that are brands you’ve never heard of

I agree, but I suppose it depends on what circles you move in. For my friend Crown may as well be Holy Water.
