The first book, The Sword of Shannara, was actually like you say, a watered down LOTR. But book 2, Elfstones, although there are some similar elements, is an awesome story. The way the Knight of the Word stories (basically from "today" time) are later tied in to the original series, is really thumbs up. You should at least watch the Netflix season 1 Chronicles of Shannara. Might change your mind =)
