A lot of machines are $500 off.
Those machines are still overpriced. You could build a better purely gaming PC for at least 3/4 of the price. Most of "cheap" intel builds are using a 4820k, which is ridiculous and isn't more beneficial for gaming than an i5 4670k that's $100 cheaper.

Regardless of the reason, it works with no headaches. Or limited ones. There is value in that no matter the reason
Not disputing it. There are a lot of people that are very happy with their Macs. I'm head of an IT shop that supports Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and even a couple of Linux boxes.
I'm not a zealot for any of them. I'm typing this on a Win7 desktop, there's a MacBook Pro sitting on my desk, and an Android phone on my belt. Each one has things it does well and others it does not so well. I just want people to make informed decisions based on their needs and the capabilities of each device/OS.

We've had an hp for about 4 years and now it's slow as shite now.
Ah. Windows Rot. Do you do anything to keep it fast?
HP laptops typically have factory reset images. I bet if you do that it'll run like new. Uninstall the bloatware (pcdecrapifier, or revo uninstaller) and it'll be even faster. Lots of patches to download again, but I just did it to a Vista running laptop.
It's like new.
I'm not paying the Apple premium. I just got a 17 inch laptop for 350 (bigger than any macbook, I believe). If I need another one in three years (not likely), so frickin' what. I can buy three of them for the price of one MacBook.

Chromebook+Ubuntu. Your wife will never notice the difference.
Don't know about the Ubuntu bit . . but I will second the chromebook if you can do everything in a browser. And most people can, especially with the advent of browser office apps (Google Docs, and Microsoft has Office variants).
I bought the cheap Acer for 200 bucks, has a 16 gig ssd. That thing browses as fast as anything I use, has insane batter life, and there's nothing on it to break (Windows).
