There is also the humanitarian cost of having a country that used to export prostitutes and porn stars now being too poor to do either.
And there is the odd spectacle of having people starve to death in one of the most fertile countries in the world.
So, yes, Venezuela is a big deal. Because if they decide to stop selling us gas tomorrow we will invade them on Tuesday.

Not really. We produce 81% of our own oil. Of the remaining amount, 40% comes from Canada. 7% comes from Venezuela, so they're just 1.3% of the total oil we use.

We actually sell them more than they buy from us. $1.65 billion vs $963 million.

We could replace what we buy from them with Mexican or Canadian oil very easily. We import oil from 81 different countries.
The only way you'll ever see us involved militarily in Venezuela is if the country completely implodes, and we want to keep control of the reserves from falling into even worse hands than the current communists. This part is just my opinion.

Yeah the economics of Venezuela’s oil industry have changed drastically since Chavez took it over. Their production in general has plummeted and they are on the road to becoming a net importer. They can’t meet their contractual obligations for exports (including the loan deals with China) because the infrastructure is collapsing, and they are importing to satisfy their own domestic gasoline demands.
Aside from the humanitarian crisis that is playing out on TV, there is an environmental crisis on Lake Maracaibo where most their largest center of production is (basically their equivalent of our Permian Basin). They haven’t been able to afford to do basic maintenance on their production (or on refineries) in years. There are oil slicks and toxic waste everywhere.
Full blown civil war in Venezuela seems like a matter of “when” not “if”
