On this subject I came across this article from IFLScience, warning that the middle initial is not work safe, about Homo Erectus and whether they had a rudimentary language or not.

I'm of the opinion that sign language evolved before spoken communication. This would mean that the use of symbolism appeared in hominins long before it's credited to modern humans about 60,000 years ago.
Modern humans were drawing animals in caves 35,000 years ago in France but Neanderthals were doing the same thing, in addition to using abstract symbols (as in the OP's first pic), in Spain 64,000 years ago. We're learning that the other species who were living at the same time as H. sapiens were much more advanced than we're giving them credit for.
