The way that the public perception of Carter has changed is fascinating. He's considered the ultimate liberal icon, a veritable saint of a man, unconcerned with finances, and beloved by political leaders across the world.

Carter won election by campaigning as a conservative Democrat who was dedicated to destroying the choke hold the East Coast elite had on the party (he did). He was strongly pro-business, calling attention to the fact that he had turned his parent's floundering peanut farm into a multi-million dollar enterprise(ended his promising Navy career to do so). Carter's civil rights record was... spotty... and he actively cultivated the Klan vote when he ran for Governor of Georgia (he did pivot away from them after being elected). If you were a politician to know Carter was to loathe Carter, the Presidents that followed after him were united in their intense dislike of his meddling. Well, until Trump came along.

How did his image change? Well, people eventually forgot about the economic downturn under his administration (mostly caused by factors outside Jimmy's control, but exacerbated by his poor choices in managing the situation), the US as a whole drifted heavily to the Right, and Carter's work on Habitat for Humanity rehabbed his image in a way no one could have guessed. The narrative changed to "Jimmy Carter was too good a person to be President."

The media loves an easy to present narrative. FDR's fireside chats. I like Ike. Reagan's morning in America. Teddy Roosevelt as the Bull Moose bellowing "bully!" Carter's narrative changed to beloved icon too good for this world.

In reality he was a brilliant but flawed man. A notorious micro-manager who not only couldn't see the forest for the trees, sometimes couldn't even see the tree for the bark. Carter is very much a man out of time, his version of a Rural Democrat is effectively deader than disco. Jimmy Carter has lasted so long that even the people who hated him grew to grudgingly respect him. He outlasted his public perception.

There is a factory that makes the Tickle Me Elmo toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms.

Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 8:00 am.

The next day at 8:45 am there is a knock at the Personnel Manager’s door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new Employee.

He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2 men march down to the factory floor. When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me Elmo’s all over the factory floor and they’re really beginning to pile up.

At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me Elmo’s. She has a roll of plush Red fabric and a huge bag of small marbles.

The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package between Elmo’s legs.

The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter. After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and approaches Lena .

“I’m sorry,” he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, “but I think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you yesterday.”

“Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles.”
