A guy goes into the US Postal Services to apply for a job.
The interviewer asks him, "Are you allergic to anything?" He replies, "Yes, caffeine. I can't drink coffee."
"OK, have you ever been in the military service?" "Yes," he says, "I was in Afghanistan for one tour." The interviewer says, "that will give you 5 extra points toward employment."
Then he asks, "Are you disabled in any way?" The guy says, "Yes. A bomb exploded near me and I lost both my testicles." The interviewer grimaces and then says, "Disabled in your country's service! Well that qualifies for extra bonus points!! Looking at the regulations you have got enough points for me to hire you right now. Our normal hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can start tomorrow at 10:00 am, and plan on starting at 10:00 AM every day."
The guy is puzzled and asks, "if the work hours are from 8:00AM to 4:00 PM , why don't you want me here until 10:00 AM ?"
"This is a government job," the interviewer says. "For the first two hours, we just stand around drinking coffee and scratching our balls. No point in you coming in for that."

I meant to ask you, I saw where you said it hasn't rained there in months (we haven't had any in over a month ourselves).
What do you do in that situation?
Do you have enough ground water for irrigation? Or assuming you're allowed to withdraw from it, is there enough surface water available (like a river) that doesn't dry up nearby?
That just sounds like a terrible deal for any moderately-sized ag operation.
Hope you get some non-severe soakings over your way.

We are putting out hay trying to stretch the grass out even though the grass is so brown and dry even with rain it's not coming back this year. Once the grass is gone we will have to rely on hay.
I have lol had 550 round bales I planned on using around the start of December but we started haying in September. Hopefully I have enough hay to get me to spring and hopefully have the rains to get grass growing again.
The last couple of years we have added metered water taps and water fountains on our places because the ponds have gone dry.
We haven't planted our wheat yet for winter grazing. Depending on the rain we are supposed to get this evening we may try and get it planted tomorrow or Friday.
They are talking up to 6-8 inches of rain starting Saturday - Tuesday. Last time they forecasted that I think I got 0.25 of an inch of rain.
If I plant my wheat I have to gamble how much fertilizer I want to put down with the wheat when planting. Too much rain it washes away. Too little rain it may burn your wheat up. Too hard of rain it packs the ground and your wheat doesn't come up.
It's always a gamble on what you do. Extreme weather just makes it harder trying to decide. 2020 we got hit with a heavy ice storm on October 27th.
Pictures below are a couple of our places that are 10 miles apart. These pastures should still be green.
Thanks for asking.

How much grazing land do you have that you are having to replace with hay?
Posted on 10/30/24 at 6:23 pm to kywildcatfanone
We are putting hay out on 640 acres that we have cattle on, around 200 head. The place we dont have cattle on is just a hay meadow that we cut back in July and it hasn't grown back.
Wasp I forgot to look. I'll check it out thanks for the link
Picture below is a 30 acre field and made 124 round bales back in July. We were planning on cutting it in August but with the lack of rain it never grew enough and then turned toxic "high in nitrates which is poisonous to cattle." We couldn't get the second cutting so last week we cut it down. It should be green too instead of brown. We will disc the ground turning it under so we can plant wheat.
Cattle are expecting rain they are all heading to barns. Storm fronts supposed to hit here soon.

A nun is walking to church.
As she passes her local store, the shopkeeper says, "Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today, Sister?"
She finds it odd, but keeps walking. On her walk, three more people pass her and say, "Wake up on the wrong side of the bed today, Sister?"
Still baffled as she gets to the church, she walks to another nun at the pulpit and asks, "Why does everyone keep asking me if I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today?!"
The other nun looks down and says, "You're wearing the priest's shoes"
