Still one of the all time great diplomatic blunders in US history. The Iranians hated us (for really good reasons to be honest) but they did not want a hostile United States aligned against them. They also did not want to drive out American citizens working in Iran. They needed them in key technical positions.

And then Carter starting playing footsies with the exiled Shah of Iran. It all turned to crap and we've been unofficially at war with Iran for 45 years.
