I'm very late to this one... my computer went tits up on me, but the Youtube channel "World War II" covered this recently.
US airstrikes had basically wiped out the ground based planes that Japan had in the area, but fearful of being shamed for admitting so, the local commanding officers didn't tell the Japanese Navy this. The Japanese went down there, thinking they would have several hundred land based planes in support, and were hung out to dry.
