I like where this is going but check it out. The drug they're taking inadvertently causes them to mutate. When they get to the planet they're not recognizable as humans. They get to the dead planet, realize they're furked, and send one last garbled warning message/plea for help back to Earth.
That message is the original message that came to Earth in the first place causing the mission to be sent out.

If these signals do travel faster than an ordinary wave could be the originators of the signal aren't dead

Oh, I don't think they travel any faster. The speed I was talking about is the duration of the bursts. Just incredibly brief.
If the lady speaking to the UN is correct about this signal being some sort of intelligent burst, I would guess there's maybe some gravitational lensing going on or something leading us to believe these signals are coming from somewhere afar when it's actually much nearer.

Could be. If there are aliens they could be transmitting things in frequencies we cant hear but that can damage a non-fully developed brain.
