Called "the cradle of civilization of the Western world," the ancient city of Caral in Peru is known for its pyramids, which represent one of the world's greatest discoveries. Although they are more weather-worn and less physically impressive than other pyramids around the world, they are no less historically significant, and their discovery offers new insights into the history of the Americas.

Caral has the distinction of being the oldest known city in the Americas and one of the oldest in the world. The Caral pyramids were built approximately 5,000 years ago. They predate the Egyptian pyramids by around 100 years, and the Inca pyramids by an impressive 4000 years. Crafted from stone, their design indicates a complex and advanced architectural understanding. Like other pyramids in history, the Caral pyramids are believed to have religious significance and to have been used in city gatherings and celebrations. There are six total pyramids, the largest of which -- Piramide Mayor -- measures about 450 by 500 feet and is more than 60 feet in height.

It’s possible the American civilizations were as or almost as thriving as the ones in the Fertile Crescent/Nile/Indus etc..., but they were so isolated from the rest of the world, that we’ll probably never really know.

There could be a lot more hidden in the Amazon.

I just have to wonder at these civilizations that disappear. The Khmer? What?

Some of the similarities between ancient south American civilizations and Egypt are strange. The pyramids(though not the same type as those in Egypt) and mummies of course, but the fact that mummies from both south America and Egypt are often found with nicotine and/or cocaine in their hair, bones, etc. makes one wonder if there was some form of trade far before Columbus "re-discovered" the New World.
Obviously the Vikings showed up pre-Columbus, but Egypt would be way earlier, if they had some form of trade to get tobacco and cocoa leaves
Mesopotamia and Egypt were extremely advanced (for the time at least) so why wouldn't some of those in the America's be as well

Yeah its weird. The mayans, or the city of Cahokia in North America. Some cities, no matter how grandiose, were abandoned, and the question of why is difficult to answer.

This is what they think Cahokia looked like. The city was abandoned.

I wonder if it would relate to perhaps a fear of a curse by their gods on the city due to people getting sick from lack of sanitation, or maybe the death of the leaders and everyone decided to bale

Caral and Gobekli Tepi (Thought to have been built around 10,000 B.C or earlier) always gets my mind spinning with questions and intrigue on how old we really are.

The Yonaguni monument off the coast of southern Japan & the Pyramid structures/complex that they found on the bottom of the ocean off the western most tip of Cuba also seem to bring on brain boners. Weed helps
