Had just joined the military and at my first base your first month there you had to do gate guard duty to augment all the cops going to Iraq at that time.
One day we had a hit and run on base, they radioed over the make and model of the vehicle a dark colored truck so of course everyone on base was looking for it.
About 2 hours later nothing had been found and this truck with some front end damage (what had been reported) was pulling up to the gate. It was the wrong kind of truck, wrong color but I understand that stuff can easily be gotten wrong right at the moment.
I tried to get the cop that was there supporting us to come out and take a loot at it as I really had no power. He blew it off and told me nah it didn't match the report. I pressed him about it and told him I understand that stuff can be wrong, but it's still suspicious.
I got him to come out and talk to the guy. Turns out it was the guy and it was actually another off duty cop.
A few days later the base commander comes and gives the cop who caught him a coin and letter thanking him for his vigilance etc etc.
I didn't speak up as I had just gotten there and didn't really realize how the whole game had worked just yet.
Still fricking pissed at myself for letting that kid get away with that and not speaking up.

When I was 14 me and some friends got drunk at our girlfriends house, there was a public cemetery behind the fence in her backyard...we went in there and kicked over a bunch of gravestones and even rolled a couple of oval ones into the street.
So fricking stupid.
So fricking stupid.
