I wish we could get a sticky for this thread. It is a good reference, and I like hearing about other people's experiences on different rivers.

My threads will never be stickied. Unwritten admin rule - Never sticky a Killz thread for any reason. That would amount to encouragement.

I've floated, waded or swam in most of those rivers. If you want a real treat add the Buffalo to the list. I know it's AR but it's the only midwest river that is prettier than the upper Jacks. "Hemmed in hollow" is a must see.

The Arkansas rivers thread will happen another day as a separate thread

That's a short list, The Buffalo and the Mulberry. What else you got?
I've done the Arkansas, Colorado, Ocoee and American, all white water rafting. Got any other WW recommendations? I'm always looking for a new river to float.

White water?
Depends on the time of year. If you want an incredible ww experience, drive to Beckley, West Virginia in October during their famous Bridge Days festival and risk your luck on the New and Gauley rivers.
Those are the best ww excursions in America during that time of year.

I've floated the Arkansas and the Gualey. The Gualey was fun but not that risky. When the water's up the St. Francis and the Cossotot can be dangerous.

Did you float the Gauley in October during Bridge Days when they let the water out of the dam? It goes from class II and III rapids to class V rapids during that time...
It is the best ww in the country during that time of year.
I, too, have done the New and Gauley rivers during different times of the year. Usually, those rivers are relatively easy with occasional waterfalls.
During Bridge Days they are a completely different animal.

Have you competed in the MR340? Do you know Scott Mansker?
Posted on 5/30/14 at 11:06 am to mizzoukills
No I haven't. I know more of the columbia contingent. Like Steve Schnarr, Anthony Pettit, and Jeff Barrow

Scott is the organizer of the MR340 race and he works very closely with River Relief. In fact, I believe that the MR340 donates a large portion of money to River Relief, and in return River Relief supplies a few safety boats during the race.
River Relief sponsors the MR340 and the MR340 (Rivermiles.com) sponsors River Relief. Both are sponsored by Missouri American Water.
They all fit together like a hand in a glove.

I grew up near Silvermines and know the Saint well. I've seen it when the old damn was just a ripple there was so much water. We are pretty spoiled when it comes to float streams.

I'm looking to get a decent kayak. I'll mainly use it for lake fishing, but I'd also like something I could float down the river in. Maybe something i could take one a one or two night float trip. Not really looking to do any crazy whitewater stuff. Problem is I've never bought or used a kayak so I have no clue what to look for. Is a sit on top model better or a sit in?
FWIW, here's the one I'm considering...

I'm using a FS10 Ascend from Bass Pro and like it a ton. I have overnighted using it and it works if you back light. I met a guy on the river who had the 12' footer and he wished he has the 10' because its more maneuverable, 10' seems like a great length for Missouri's streams. I need about 4" of water unless really loaded heavy.
Get the longest paddle you can.
