A team spokesman for Mizzou basketball has confirmed that Illinois transfer Mark Smith has been granted an NCAA waiver and is eligible to play immediately for the Tigers this season.

What is the basis of the waiver? Thought playing immediately was a rare exception.

It’s got to be mental health.
Or just threaten to sue the NCAA.

Hardship

Basically from what I've heard Smith was in the hospital and got no support from the coaching staff, there became an issue there and he asked to transfer.

Apparently Dru Smith is less likely to be cleared because there's no hardship, just his coach leaving.

Lot of people asking why Mark Smith is eligible. Honestly, I don’t know. Two possible explanations:

1) The NCAA appears to be approving pretty much every waiver request these days
2) If former school doesn’t object, that can help with approval. Maybe Brad Underwood said fine.

Apparently Dru was denied, but Mizzou is appealing
