I think he deserves the help. That was never my point to be clear.
I just find it frustrating that much of the youth and academic vote focused on their short term needs instead of thinking longer term fiscal health of the government. Big government cant be sustained indefinitely and sometime soon one of these generations is going to have to say enough is enough and tighten the purse strings or the country will end up in a place it can never recover from.
I should not have focused on that young man. I wish him success in his academic endeavors.

Well glad to have another female presence around here.

I agree, which is why I made the Greece reference earlier.

There are jobs out there that don't require a college education, that pay very well. The problem is, the American ideal has changed. Status matters more than substance.
A licensed plumber makes upwards of $40 per hour, while working for a company, more if independent. However, the machine has led everyone to believe that they need to be a corporate slug, or a lawyer, or a doctor. The reality of the world is, there will always be shite to clean up, and a good plumber gets paid well to do it.
College is not, and never has been a requirement to be successful in America. Lies and subterfuge by the powers that be to create debt for a young person that is hard to over come. College sounds a lot easier than learning how to be a plumber does. But usually ends up paying less.

Sadly, I think that rings true for every topic, not just academics. And youth are hardly the only ones guilty of this short termed thinking (not trying to preach, I bet you agree with that too, I'm just sayin). Just about every political decision is based on short term appeal.
I think you've hit the nail on a larger problem. Our friend MS2 is just a microcosm of a larger problem. Each little voter segment gets played to by the candidates to get votes, when you apply this tactic across the board you have a serious problem.
I know you're a military guy, I don't want to open this bag so late.. but I think the military is just out of control with spending and wastes an incredible amount of resources. We don't need permanent bases all over the world to protect our imperialist interests. Okay.. I'm gonna stop.

It might have some advantages to be a girl again, but only if I could do it in the same era. "Back in the 'good ole days.'"

Nope. I agree. 100%. The military spending is ridiculous. From contract spending to salaries. I work on a Marine base, those guys make ALOT of money, it's not like it was when I was in. I'll never begrudge anyone for what they earn, especially for the job that is required in the military. But trust me, there are some serious salaries for the military right now.
As far as contract spending, I'm not employed by DOD, but I am a federal employee. I see gouging from contractors on a daily basis. Trust me, it's frustrating, it limits our budgets, and how well we can do our jobs.

I think the Military needs to spend resources smarter honestly. I think much of our defense needs could be met within a more normalized and reasonable defense budget. I have seen DoD waste like spending first hand.
I agree with the earlier part of your post as well. Its not all on the youth and academic voting demographic. It just presented itself as an argument.
Until collectively we, as a nation, decide to cut back and do without in order to right the ship things are never going to change sadly.

That's a better way to make the point I was trying to make. Success is defined differently than it used to be. And as a single, college-educated woman who owns my own home, give me a genuinely good guy who knows how to do stuff any day before a desk jockey whose major claim to fame is the degree hanging on the wall.
And Kilo - I didn't mean to imply you'd somehow attacked MS2, I didn't see it that way at all. I just meant to say that I felt as though academically, it sounded as though his grants were well deserved. That's not the case for everyone.
And Bogie? Every time you post, I like you more and more!!

Kilo,
I maintain Air Traffic Control systems. We have a radar display in ATC towers, it is basically nothing more than a 27' LCD monitor. The contractor charges over $5,000 for a replacement. Nonsense.

I've got into really heated arguments with my parents (mid 50's) on this topic. I play the blame game too often, but I get really angry at that generation for their behavior the last 30 years.. like really really angry.

Yeah, that rebel gator is a disaster.
At least guys like Dale Denton are pure trolls, that gator guy is just an idiot.

I hear you man.
You should have seen the nonsense that private contractors got paid for downrange in Iraq.We had contractors making 6 figures MONTHLY to run MWR tents that were complete shite while I watched poor National Guard units run around outside the wire in HWMMVs without proper up armoring to defeat IED's. Thats just the tip of the iceberg of some of the CRAZY that goes on in the DoD.
Its really unbelievable.

That surprises me that your parents don't share your concerns. If anything, I would think your philosophy is more the mindset of a "baby boomer."
