I did read an interesting article going over the time since the country went off the gold standard and that it allowed the country to have a faux sustained economic boom.
It is interesting that much of the economic growth was partially smoke and mirrors created by this event.

Can't happen with our current media oppression.

Dont worry, the handouts will continue.
You might not find work with after you graduate but you will have a degree.

Did anyone other than me watch CNN tonight? James Carville and Alex whatever his name is (repub consultant) had an interesting conversation about the future of the Republican party. How they will have to adjust, and they need a "new" Republican face to change the image as the "party of no", and to reject the talking head, hard-liners that won't accept anyone who is different from them.
Another interesting thing tonight is how the Republicans got their arse kicked in Senate races. They were pretty handily beaten there, and having 2 candidates in the same election cycle make the news for outrageous comments about rape, pregnancy and abortion, doesn't help them with women. The gender gap was interesting - mothers voted for Obama by an 11 point margin. That should tell them something. Hispanics are a rapidly growing "minority" and vote against the Republicans over immigration policy. There's a lot to take in tonight.

Real soon (maybe now) a college degree is about as useful as a high school diploma. I'm with you on this issue for sure, college shouldn't be a birth right that the government pays for.
Well... if nothing else, I think we all learned a little about each other tonight.

Yes there is Semo.
The tea party movement did long term harm to the republican party as well.

Yea. I'm impressed we could all have a great conversation with varying opinions and views and still have a little fun with each other and still be civil.
Thats what its all about.

I agree. I don't mind grants for deserving students, but not everybody is cut out for college. And that's OK - but having a college degree has become a status symbol, and you're looked down on if you don't have one in some circles. That's BS, but it is what it is. I was first generation college - my parents were both too poor to go, and for them it was VERY important that all three of their children be able to get a college degree. They put all three of us through college without loans (small college, scholarships, and a lot of saving), and it was one of the things they were most proud of.
But now we are convinced that you need a degree to be successful. Until we understand that isn't the case, we're going to continue to see lots of young people take the college route that aren't necessarily cut out for it. MS2, you got grants, and you keep them through your GPA. Good for you. I'd say you deserve the help. Sadly, not everyone does.

And Bogie and Semo, currency should be backed by something, not just printed on a whim. Our problem is our money is loaned to us from a bank independent of our government (which is criminal), and we've printed way too much of it. But the gold standard suggestion is not a good one, a straight gold standard is guaranteed to create stagflation. Just for future reference in case you use that in an argument, don't want someone that knows economics to pin you down on that.
Point taken, but our dollar is not worth the paper on which it is printed! And they just print more, with nothing to back it up!

I flipped back and forth, but saw that segment you're talking about.
That kind of influenced that comment I made about the Republicans not blending nicely. The liberal brand is kind of streamlined regardless of demographic. But the Republican brand is just in shambles.

Scary isnt it?

And that brings up another issue - a lot of the jobs that people without degrees used to depend on have moved overseas. We don't have the manufacturing anymore, and that used to be a backbone of our country. There aren't enough good jobs for those without degrees anymore (or for those with them either!), and that needs to change.

Yeah, there is just literally no way to back all our money on gold. Our economy would have to be 1/100th the size.. lot's of other problems exist in exporting/importing too, unless everyone get's on it. There should be a role for gold and findings ways to have substance behind the paper, but a full gold standard is just impossible at this point.
