Mizzou beats an undermanned Iowa St. team. They only had 8 players in uniform. Don’t know if they had a bunch of injuries, or what, but I think we could have scored anytime we wanted to inside.
Speaking of inside, Tilmon is the real deal! Might be the best post player to ever wear a Missouri uniform. MPJ bruised hip was a non factor, but it was nice to see we could dominate another team without his presence. A reporter at halftime told me it wasn’t anything serious, but they held him out, much to the chagrin of the sellout crowd, for precautionary reasons.
Puryear lead us in scoring off the bench, but the guy just cannot jump at all. When he goes inside he gets stuffed 99% of the time. He has a great mid range jumper, but if he gets a rebound, the best thing he should do is kick it back out. Barnett did his thing too. Geist looked good. Wouldn’t mind seeing him at the point, and Robertson at the 2 guard. He’s feisty if nothing else.
There were several things that needs work, but if you think Martin is a slow down offense type of guy only, think again.
A couple things I’d like to see more of, is penetration by the guards, and kick it out to the 3 pt shooters when the defense collapses around them. And, feed the post. Tilmon can score on anybody. We also need to hit the offensive boards more and better. 17 turnovers are too many too.
Defensively, I’d like to see more of Johntay and Tilmon in the game at the same time. That would keep teams from penetrating to the rim. If Barnett is going to play the 3, then he needs to be better at guarding. He’s a little slow footed to guard a 6’5 guy that can drive or shoot the 3. Our point guard and 2 guard need quit collapsing in the middle so much. We have big guys that will stop that. Focus on not letting the opposition have wide open 3’s. The Clones were cold early from outside, but they were open nonetheless. In the 2nd half, they started hitting a few of those wide open shots. Good teams will exploit that on us.
Overall, I thought we played very well for the first game. The players played like a team, and seemed to have good chemistry. This was a concern for me, with so many talented freshmen coming into the program. You never know how that’s going to work, but Cuonzo made sure the upper class men got a lot of minutes for the most part. And they contributed very well.
After tonight, I think our best and starting 5 should be Geist, Robertson, MPJ, Barnett, and Tilmon. (Of course that’s subject to change as the year progresses) Johntay, Puryear, will get a lot of minutes. Harris looked like a freshman, and Phillips was a non factor. CVL and Nikko are mop up guys. I didn’t see C.J. Roberts play at all. I might have missed him though.
That’s what it looked like live. How did you see it on television?

How was the atmosphere? Seemed electric to start but then, on TV at least (where it's hard to get a real feel) it seemed like the crowd kind of lost it. From what I remembered, even the lower bowl people showed up.

As to what it looked like to me on TV:

I don't think there were as many open shots in the 1st half as you might think. Much of the reason ISU was cold was because we were forcing bad shots.

Jontay seemed to be a step slow. He'll be fine as the season goes on.

CVL earned points with me with a hustle play but then showed again he's just way too slow and can't defend.

FT shooting was improved.

I'm ok with Geist off the bench but still not sure I trust him beyond that. That too can change with time.

Puryear is much better when he doesn't have to be the man. Same for Barnett.

Just so many damn options. Interior passing was a bright spot.

Getting back on transition defense needs work.

Jontay made a couple of awesome passes. He will be inconsistent this year, but will end up being a stat stuffer.

Harris also had a couple of passes, he will also be good once he learns to play st this level.

The atmosphere was electric. Haven’t seen Mizzou Arena like this ever before! I did at Hearnes. I think the crowd was disappointed cause ?MPJ couldn’t play, and nobody knew why. Of course in the 2nd half there was really no doubt who was going to win. But when Geist hit that 3 to put us up 20, it was really loud!
I agree about Johntay. He looked a little out of shape when the ball got moving up and down the court. And he looked 17. He will be good later on, but needs to be more aggressive.
CVL...I don’t know. He plays fairly good perimeter defense, and hustles his butt off, but I don’t see him playing a lot of minutes 10 games from now.
Geist can get himself into trouble when he penetrates, but when he was on the point, Robertson could look for his shot more. With Robertson at the point, it seems like we’re wasting his ability.
I agree with your analysis of Puryear and Barnett. I mentioned that in another thread.
We got beat back a few times, but for the most part, we did much better than last year at getting back.
If we have Johntay, Tilmon, and MPJ on the floor at the same time, the other teams points will have to come from 3, cause they are big and tough inside, especially blocking shots and altering shots.
Tilmon was the most impressive player I saw on the floor tonight. He looks like a men amongst boys! But, in fairness, the Clones didn’t have much height either. But Tilmon arm length, hands, and footwork in the post are something special. Put Johntay and MPJ in at the same time, with Tilmon, and we have as good of a front line as anybody in the country!

Boys looked good and the atmosphere was fricking phenomenal.

Fun to be in the Arena again. The dunk by Barnett in the first few minutes caused quite a stir.

I forgot what it looked like to have a sold out arena, especially with the entire conference laughing at both our football and basketball attendance the past few years. Feels good.

Oh I think you’re right. They’re freshmen. I shouldn’t expect so much from them. Johntay looked a little out of shape, but Harris was pretty much lost, and maybe just a little in awe of the stage and atmosphere.

I did see Knox play in the Kentucky game tonight. Wow, if we had gotten him too, I would say elite 8 or final 4. He’s special.

My iPad is about out of juice. I watched the 2nd half of the Kentucky game on it, and sent so many pictures and replies to friends during the Mizzou game.

I had great seats about 20 rows off the floor, but I also had a “jumping Johnny” sitting in front of me. I missed some plays due to that. But, it was great to see excitement back for Mizzou BB.
Now if we can get 60,000 out tomorrow night for the football game. It’s going to be cold, but if the rain holds off, I think we’ll have a decent crowd. I’ve talked to several that quit going after the 1-5 start. But they are coming tomorrow night. We’re all getting together tomorrow afternoon for a little tailgating before the game.

I was at the game tonight too. The on the court success was great, but it was really nice to see the arena alive again.

I haven't seen it like that since 2012. Mizzou basketball is back

No doubt. Been awhile. So great to see a capacity crowd and into the game.

Mizzou Arena will be a tough place to play once again.

Jontay needs to play more, Tilmon needs to recognize the double team, Robertson has to break free for the three.
