Personal belief, marijuana should be legalized. It's not. Whether you think athletes should participate in civil disobedience or not, it does show a character flaw on their part or at least a flaw in their decision making process. They know the law, they chose to break the law. Again, I personally believe athletes are to be held to a higher standard, so that factors into my beliefs as well.

Except that it is supposed to have been decriminalized in the city of Columbia for possession of less than 35 grams. Unless they had more than 35 grams it could be against the law, but it's not a criminal issue and shouldn't be subject to arrest based on my reading of the law.

It's not civil disobedience if it's not against the law, it's just civil. The laws of the City of Columbia state that this is the lowest priority of offence, I'm guessing based on the text that it's on the order of jaywalking unless there is a lower priority within CPD regulational priority than the lowest.

This should absolutely not be an issue with the Columbia Police based upon the will of the voters when they decriminalized the possession of less than 35 grams of Marijuana in 2004.

Why is this issue with the players instead of with the police? If it was completely legal to possess weed in the state of Missouri would we have an issue? No.

Marijuana possession of less than 35 grams is a minor, civil "lowest priority" offense in the city of Columbia. Why are we even talking about it outside of potential team rules violations?

That's the real issue.

Your rebuttal to my counter was a repeat of your first point, so how is that actually a rebuttal to what I said?

Because it's simply the only counter that needs to be stated.

You can piss and whine and moan all you want. As soon as you walk up to a police officer in the state of Missouri with your weed, show him, and tell him having it should be legal you still get cited or arrested.

Please explain to him how it's a stupid law, and the man is holding us all back. Then you will promptly be taken to jail.

No matter how hip you are, how cool you think weed makes you, no matter what emo music you have turned on in your car. It's still illegal and whatever rationalization you have for it is asinine.

Had originally had a long winded analysis and decided to just leave it at yepp, it's all just a clusterfrick. Just an FYI though, if you're in Columbia, I do think it's still a criminal offense and they simply have tried to minimize the punishment available. The ordinances still say its a Class A misdemeanor for whatever that's worth.

You totally just changed the argument in a strange way.

That's not the point, of course you're going to get in trouble if an officer finds weed in your possession.

No one is arguing that.

The point that was made is that when these kinds of stories come out the ones that hold the opinion it's the law, it doesn't matter if it's dumb, it's just the law are enabling bad laws to remain bad laws. It's a limp stance to take.

Either take the side that it should remain illegal, or be pro legalization. This attitude that we must follow laws just because they're laws is detrimental to democracy.

I've never actually looked at the law, but from various people that I trust I've heard that personal possession under 35 grams warrants only a citation, not arrest.

There may be different laws regarding being on campus, just like being in a school zone changes things. I'm not sure where they were or what if any rules are different on campus.

Nobody is debating that it should be a citation, however, you can only have one citation for marijuana possession under 35 grams every 5 years. It's against athletic department policy and that is the reason all deserve to be suspended knowing it was against the rules.
