Former Auburn strength coach lands new SEC job
By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
A longtime member of Gus Malzahn’s staff at Auburn has landed a new SEC opportunity.
Ryan Russell, the Tigers’ head strength and conditioning coach the last eight seasons under Malzahn, is expected to be hired as part of Eliah Drinkwitz’s staff at Missouri, sources told AL.com.
Russell and Drinkwitz have a relationship that dates back to at least 2010 when the two worked together at Auburn. They also worked together at Arkansas State under Malzahn in 2012.
It’s unclear at this point what Russell’s title will be at Missouri.
In addition to serving as Auburn’s head strength and conditioning coach, Russell was also the team’s director of nutrition and was promoted last year to the Tigers’ executive director of football.
“I think the best thing is Ryan’s work ethic and his standard,” Malzahn said of Russell in 2019. “He doesn’t deviate from the standard. Our players really feed off that. There’s no gray area. It’s either get it done or you don’t get it done. That really helps with our overall program, mental and physical toughness. He’s with our players more than anybody and just does a super job laying the foundation for us.”
