"We were concerned about the potential encroachment on the traditional tailgate atmosphere brought about by multiple commercial operators on campus and others seeking to begin operations," said Don Buffum, MSU's director of procurement and contracts. "We regret that these changes may have a negative impact on a small number of our fans but wanted to preserve the first-come, first-served tradition at MSU tailgates for the majority of fans who continue to set up their own tents."

quote:

Under the policies, MSU will designate two areas for commercial tent operations to be comprised of one-half of the amphitheater area and one-half of the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Building's grass area.

So basically if you and your friends pay for a tailgate, you won't be able to hang out in the real junction? Glad I didn't pull that trigger this year.

Or is it mainly talking about all the huge white tents right there beside the main part of the junction?

anyone that sets up ten or more tents is considered a "Commercial Tailgater" by university policy. If you are paying a company to put up your tent, they will be charged a fee after this year and the tent will be located in one of those two spots.

Where is the agriculture/ bio engineering area that they are speaking of?

If you pay a college kid to set it up for you, you're good though.

Those are set-up through the University and are a MSU operation. There are some commercial operations that will set-up your tailgate area for you complete with tv's and such. You can even buy into a food package.

I don't know how to feel about these changes but there are definitely loopholes here. I think an enterprising student could still get away with setting up tents for relatives and other alumni with no hassle.

I don't like not being in the middle part. Around the middle part is fine. The ag/bio place is ok but nobody wants to be in the ampitheater

I think this is what we do. He sets up a number of tents but don't think he sets up more than 10.

Southern Tradition had 15 or 20 tents up by the SAE house last year taking up both sides of the sidewalk. Their tents are usually black. They provide a tent, flat screen, satellite and power, couple of tables and a few chairs.

Apparently the school just informed everyone of this a little while back. That's pretty crappy to do right before the season starts, if the tailgaters aren't able to get out of their commitment. Everyone on here doesn't seem to mind too much but some people are pissed about it for that reason.

Southern Tradition might have made a fuss about it because they were made to setup in the amphitheater last year and noone else was.
