I find the whole recruiting process in general to be ridiculous/embarrassing. I don't find this any more ridiculous than sending an eighteen year old 200 handwritten letters and texting/calling him constantly.
I LOLed when I read the second one. Plus I don't really know the whole story behind these things.

I would say it was par for the course. Everyone, especially Freezus, is willing to do many things for great recruits.
For everyone else: These letter's are inside jokes, they are proof of the deep relationships we are establishing with these kids. Every school has their own angle when approaching recruitment and apparently we've taken the friend approach.
If it fails then I think some people need to go, because it does diminish our school by dropping ourselves to this style of recruitment.
