One thing I like about a long-lived news/discussion thread combined with some recent feature additions that lets you jump to last read page is it makes for a bespoke timeline on the goings-on for that subject matter.
Additionally, I've got some experience with old school message boards that have been around for two decades now. One thing we did for long-lived threads was create a tagging system for threads and a system for filtering out tags from your thread list view. Some people don't want to see those cliques of discussion or some want to focus on those discussion. I'm not sure what the goals are for fighting against long-lived threads but if the issue being that they limit visibility for other discussion maybe tagging and filtering would help?
