Caveats: Yes I know, I've been a vocal critic of Franks. No it has nothing to do with hate. I just want to put out why I think Trask is going to start instead.

I also understand that a Spring Game is like a glorified scrimmage, but there are some key statistics that I've singled out.

First: I have taken out YAC and the fake passes to former players (I'd like to note that Franks even messed that one up, as he was supposed to throw to another Gator player but didn't remember).

Total Yards (W/O YAC)

Trask: 95.
Franks: 12.

If that's not bad enough: I even looked up the assortment of passes.

Trask:

1 Cross (17 yards)
3 Outs (29 yards)
4 Hooks (34 yards)
1 B. Shoulder (18 yards)
2 Screens (-3 yards)

Franks:

2 Hooks (9 yards)
1 Out (5 yards)
1 Slant (5 yards)
4 Screens (-7 yards)

Different types of passes:

Trask:5
Franks: 4

Passes of 6 yards or more:

Trask: 8
Franks: 0

Passes of 10 yards or more:

Trask: 6
Franks: 0

Average yards per completion:

Trask: 8.7
Franks: 1.7

The point of this isn't to shite on a player, it's simply the reason I'm thinking Trask is going to start. Remember: Trask has not played a meaningful snap in 6 years, so for him to dominate Franks is almost shocking.

In my mind, unless there was some miracle work or Trask completely fell down a cliff, he is the guy moving forward.

Can't wait for the season to start.

Gee, I thought the short pass was what Mullen wanted?

Appreciate your unbiased opinions on this matter.

BTW, a thread on Rant by Moo State fans talked about Chris Relf and how Mullen transformed him into good QB, the fans in preseason were dreading to Relf trot back out as the starter again...but were amazed at how Mullen improved him as a QB. I bring this up to illustrate how well Mullens does with QBs. This should give rise to hopes for 2018.

Yes, Mullen wants less yardage than more yardage.

What Mullen wants is for a QB to understand when to check down when nothing is there and not force anything.

I want Trask because he can go through progressions and Franks cant. Plus Emory has accuracy problems and pencil thin legs.

This is the difference:

For Trask, you can't just load eight in the box, lock down the outside WRs and just stuff the middle throwing lane.

If I was a defensive coordinator, I would just have the safeties cheat up outside the hashmarks, crash my CBs and jam the receivers on the outside and force them inside. I'd blitz my LBs and crash my Dline on the inside as well.

When every pass you make is below 5 yards, your defensive gameplan is monumentally easier.

Trask crushed Franks in the Spring Game in all things Quarterback.

Checkdowns, progression reads, types of throws completed, throws completed with contact (i.e., under duress) and stood tall in the pocket.

He is just a better Quarterback. I have no doubt they'll share snaps, but if I had money to throw at that bookie I'd do it right now.

My only fault with Trask is that he waits too long (has done it all throughout his HS career), but that can be fixed. The hot potato clock isn't that bad.

Not just that, a processing ability, too.

An RPO/Read option actually takes a lot of processing capacity. Especially if you're reading:

Hand off
Keep (Run)
Keep (Throw)

I don't think I trust Franks (this year, perhaps next year) to: Read the defense, adjust his line, call the play, set his offense, send someone in motion, read the defense (second time), adjust if necessary, REMEMBER THE PLAY (he went the wrong way on several play actions last year, and even messed up the celebrity bomb to Doug Johnson in the Spring game), hike the ball, read the DE and CB simultaneously, make a decision.

He can't even read the deep pass, which at 6'5'' should be outrageously easy when one player is in triple coverage and the other is streaking alone.

If this is correct, I have no doubt that he will be the starting QB when the Gators open the season!!!

If the coaches see it the same as you do. That's the big question???????????

If I were a betting man I would bet that Franks starts and both play equally in the first half and the one that plays the best plays the entire second half, if he continues to play well this guy will be the starting QB verses Kentucky. Just my 2 cents, I really have no idea what the coaches will decide.

That's the problem with the line -- it's deceptive. Franks will likely get the first snap, but I'd wager that Trask wins the job. My only 'wish' is to get Trask ready by using CHSU, Kentucky and CSU. Those three games we should be able to run very well, get him ready for the games on the road.

Franks completed zero passes over 6 yards in a Spring Game. He has clearly learned nothing.

Franks really struggles with the cerebral elements of the game!

Takes more than sheer athleticism to play QB!

Trask is the guy!

FWIW ...Tony Barnhill has an article projecting starters in the SEC and he gave the nod to Trask!

That's what I just linked. Goldkamp said his opinion isn't easily brushed off and he does indeed have sources.

Those closest to the program have pretty much felt it was going to be Trask!

We have too much athleticism at the WR position to handcuff our offense with a QB that can be so easily schemes against bc of his inability to move through his progressions!

It is still a lot less than what Mac and Nuss were asking of him pre snap.

I admit that you're correct that it's easier, but I still don't think Franks is really a 'twitch' type of guy. Those are muscle memory, intelligence, processing types of plays. A lot of guys never get the read option, and I just don't feel like a guy who was a 'pocket passer' coming out of HS is going to be able to do it.

Trask's offense actually runs the spread, and read option was woven into the fabric of his HS.

And yet, it doesn't matter because he outperformed Franks...

95 to 12.
5 to 4.
8 to 0.
6 to 0.
8.7 to 1.7.
3 to 0. (Passes completed with contact)

And has just been projected to start from a credible journalist.

Dak Prescott received two offers: One from LSU to play TE, one from MSST to play QB.

Baker Mayfield received four: Rice, FAU, New Mexico and Washington State. (He walked on at TTU)

Feleipe Franks received numerous offers: FSU, UGA, Florida, Alabama.

It's almost as if, sometimes, High School doesn't mean jack shite as to where a player will ultimately play. It didn't stop him from mopping Franks up in the Spring Game.
