If you watch the press conference on Gator Zone and listen to Roper & Summers...you cant help but feel that things are going to be much different in 2014. Muschamps Q&A was also enlightening..he looks like someone who has gotten a little sleep and cant wait for fall practice.
I think Roper will communicate with Driskel and instill a better sense of how he wants things done and especially liked Ropers position on "overthinking"....that's it is better sometimes to just run a play and not let the defense confuse you. An offense that is uptempo can not afford to overthink before the snap.
His position on teaching qbs that its ok to "underthrow" on third and long in a very positive way and he relates how important it is to have the same demeanor talking to your qb after he dumps off safety valve pass as when he completes long pass....in other words...take what the defense gives you.
Take the snap...make real quick reads and then react. Driskel may have had communication problems with Pease to some extent and held onto ball too long. A scared qb isn't going to do well.
Have a strong feeling that Muschamp searched long and hard for an OC who could help Driskel progress
and communicate well with him. Lets face it...Grier is 190 lb true frosh and will need to develop..Driskel is probably 235lbs or so and can run.
Summers has his work cut out for him and Boom made it a point of stating that Summers strong point is teaching and developing OL...starting with basics. We need that with all the new OL coming in.

Assuming that all of the problems on offense were Pease and inept OL coaching, then yeah, it's easy to have a lot of hope next year.
I just don't think it's that simple.
I don't have faith that Driskel can be anything other than a mediocre QB with solid mobility.
I don't have faith in the head coach.
Time will tell.

Also mentions he HAS NOT been calling plays, which I'm not surprised about at all. However, I doubt the pitchforks and torches crowd are going to buy that.
I should add that I don't lump everyone who doesn't think Muschamp is the guy into that crowd.

I think Driskel will do just fine in a spread offense. He's got the athleticism for it and the decision making will come when our scheme is better.
And for a guy who doesn't call plays, I've seen two offensive coordinators come through Gainesville in the past three years: One was a Superbowl playcaller, the other was an untested OC from a school that schemes to win.
They both ran the exact same offense without deviation. Either it's a huge coincidence that they came and called the same offense at Florida, or something is awry.
I'll go with the latter.

That's just not true. I'm not going to sort through articles comparing the two, but there were definitely differences in at least approach if not the outcome. I even saw one thread on another board ripping Muschamp for suggesting Pease try to adapt Weis' terminology for his offense at one point.
Passing has sucked for three years now. The run game, aside from the LSU game in 12, has not quite been what was hoped. They look a lot in their failures, but Weis and Pease did approach things differently.
And as I said before, which you seem to discount out of hand - Pease looked EXACTLY like Pease. The last job he had as OC before Bosie, where he pretty much kept the chair warm for Petersen, was Baylor. Go surf through the Baylor board back around 2005, and you will seem the exact same criticisms. As far as Weis, yeah, he was great in the pros, but college? Two good seasons at ND with one loss and one complete arse kicking in BCS games followed by three seasons of complete mediocrity? The dumpster fire Kansas is at the moment? I think you are giving these guys WAY too much credit.

Kansas was turrible before he got there.
ND hasn't been successful in several decades. We're not going to count the year where Alabama came in and curb-stomped them because let's face it: they played no one.
Secondly: You're right, it hasn't been the exact same.
It's gotten phantasmagorically worse.
But 70% rushing, 30% passing with zero adaptation and change? Yeah, both offenses were run the same. Maybe the words were changed around but it was Muschamp's power vision, no one else's.

Oh...wrong about Griers weight...he is around 183 lbs and 6'3" ??? No way no how should he see the field this year if true...and it was posted on Gator Zone.
The idiots in the stands will clamour for him of course when something goes wrong...and its silly for them to think they know more than the coaches.
Again...Im a big supporter of Driskel and folks forget how much acclaim he was bestowed coming out of high school. The kid has actually only played for ONE year...get over it. And if anyone thinks Skyler is the answer...better rewind the tape and look at his arm strength. We will probably get another qb recruit signed up...just as a precaution for this season and it will be a dual threat qb.

I guarantee if Driskel was in another offense he'd be an easy all-american. The kid just isn't a dropback passer.

quote:I hope so. He's the only offensive coach on the staff I've been impressed with this past year.
I also kind of wonder if part of his job isn't to be a sounding board due to his having experience as a head coach. This is 100% speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have a lot to do with getting Champ to rethink our offensive direction.
OT: Some profs don't even try to hide from students off-campus. My old chem teacher used to get drunk with the best of them in Midtown...few feet away from the Chem lecture hall
