247 reporting that Fuente moved down the list and Toledo HC Matt Campbell moved up.
This is based on information supplied by 247's Memphis insider. No idea how accurate that info is. Basically their insider said that he wouldn't be surprised if Fuente left for another HC position this year, but he doesn't think it's going to be SC. I still think if we offer Fuente and come with a $3.5M+ (or more than another school is offering) he will come to SC. 247 has been doing some polling of fans on who they want as HC, Fuente and Smart have been flipping from 2nd to 3rd in the poll. Herman has stayed #1.
I guess there's also been some communication with Campbell's camp/back channels. He's interested and throwing his hat in the ring.
[again, this could all just be BS, plenty of misinformation and 'searching for leaks' information is going to come out for the next few weeks}

Fuente is still #1 on our list ... he hasn't dropped, the list is getting longer.
They want six by the 15th.
They want it narrowed to two by the 30th.
They wanted the guy signed NLT 10 December unless he's HCing in the playoffs ... but that scares everyone for obvious reasons.

Wow, they're doing a good job with the misinformation campaign then.
I also lurked around some of the other school's (who have HC vacancies) message boards this evening to see if I could get a better feel for who their top targets were, and scout for overlaps.
Miami
They have a hard on for Cristobal. They really want him, a loud vocal majority.
Then there is the Butch Davis crowd, a lot of people recognize him as the builder of the 2001 MNC team. He's old though, so that's their drawback.
Greg Schiano (CNB's favorite HC ever?) also threw his name in the ring.
Kirby, Kiffen and Fuente were also mentioned, but their fans aren't as high on them.
Va Tech
They aren't considering Bud Foster as seriously as I thought they were, and he's pissed. If he doesn't get it, he gone (could be a big opportunity for us to pick up an elite DC...especially if we get a HC/OC type of guy....)
They are really focusing on Rich Rod now.
The Chad Morris talk is dying, I think they saw his record now.
Matt Campbell is a name in their minds today.
Smart mentioned earlier this week that he's interested in the Va Tech job.
They like Fuente too. The Fuente talk with them started right after the announcement on our 247 site that Fuente was falling on our board, now they are getting excited about him. They've been told Fuente isn't fond of the SEC (this is positioning at it's finest, lol)
Matt Rhule from Temple is another name they've mentioned a bunch.
Several of their fans are conceding that if Herman chooses b/w va tech and SC, we'll probably win b/c of $.
So Cal
They don't even have a reporter/staff writer for their 247/CBS account.
How can they expect to compete with us for a HC?
They like Whittingham from Utah a lot.
Helton could be considered more, but he needs to win out or all but 1 (but he has to beat Oregon.)
Sumlin, Kelly, Gruden (really mother frickers?!?!) James Franklin...lololol
Jack Del Rio is a big name and a guy many of them like.
Herman and Fuente are there too, but not in their top 5.
Maryland, Minnesotta, UNT
Doesn't matter, they would have no shot competing for a candidate we want.
Georgia
They ain't gonna fire Mark Richt, not this year, not going to happen.

Lou Holtz is rarely without his trademark sense of humor. Today, he's using the aftermath of a serious situation to laugh at himself.
"I'm one of the only homeless people anyone wants to interview," the 78-year-old retired coach jokes. His house recently burned down after a lighting strike, and the rebuilding process is in full swing.
"I think Justin Fuente at Memphis has done a great job," Holtz said when asked who he would hire if the decision as left up to him. "I like him because I like to look at a guy that has been at the school a couple of years and built something because I'd rather have a guy that has shown he can recruit and sustain success than guy that just took what somebody else built and won."
Of course there are other coaches in Fuente's model. Holtz knows this. He's actually more passionate about what the South Carolina administration shouldn't do as it relates to the impending coaching hire than he is about what it should.
"Please, as the AD, hire the guy yourself," Holtz said. "Don't go to a headhunter. The reason they do that is so they can blame them if it doesn't work. They can say, 'Hey, well, I thought they checked him out.' When they talk about [former University of Southern California head coach Steve] Sarkisian, they say, 'Well, the firm we hired to find our coach didn't find any of this out.'" You want to shake hands, look them in the eye and find out if you have the same objectives."
"I'd say that it's one of the best jobs in the country," Holtz said. "The weather is beautiful, the people are fantastic, there's a lot to do. There are so many wonderful things about South Carolina. Don't underestimate the value of the school, the value of the conference or the value of the fan base. The improvement in the facilities is amazing."

In that same article it mentions how much the head coach at Ft Dorchester and his kids love Shawn Elliott.
Let's say we do get Herman, and he brings a brand new staff. Cristobal leaves Alabama to go to Miami. Elliott takes the vacant OL job at Alabama. Something tells be we're really going to regret losing Elliott from this staff. He may be the only guy worth keeping, but I think it's necessary to keep him.

Rooster, this question is for you.
Should Elliott be forced out to please the new HBC what will that do in regards to McIlwain?

Elliott will not be forced, per se, as much as it will just be what is necessary. He's probably going to be a candidate for other jobs for which he'll have a better opportunity to build his resume.
Even if Elliott were to win three of these last four games - I still have doubts he'd be asked to stay although, it would be tough not to retain him.
He's a good cheerleader. If he wants to be the HC here he'd have to win three of these last four and make some major overhaul changes on his staff. Not sure if he could pull that off with aplomb.
So to answer your question with regard to McIlwain, it's got more to do with G.A. than with Elliott from what I am hearing. G.A. would probably be retained for other reasons as well but ultimately it would be up to the next HC.

I know 'cause I'm the original scrooster.
I know because I've been doing this since we shared information through land lines and snail mail and breakfast meetings at diners that are now long gone .... bulldozed and replaced by CVS and Walgreens.
I know because I was a kid selling cokes in the stadium before it was named Willuams-Brice ... I remember watching JV games on Fridays to see who might contribute to the varsity team the next year.
I remember Dan Reeves when he came ... and his brother no one ever talks about and few these days even know played here as well.
I know because I'm a charter member of The BOGs.
I know because I rode with Coach Dietzel, partied with Coach Carlin, covered for Bib Marcum, ignored King Dixon, loved Mike McGee, tolerated Eric Hyman and help Ray Tanner up to a point until I realized Ray .... well, never mind. He's learning OJT and he's getting better. He's smart and he's a hard worker and he is learning how to play the game. He puts too much stock in Charlie Bloom.
Yet it's honestly the names I'll never post that are the reasons I know. I have to eat breakfast with those guys and then know we can all still trust one another to only share so much.
Ironically, at this stage in my life, fate and destiny intervene.
It's no secret to anyone who pays attention that I happen to have close Memphis connections. Who knew they would one day pay off in spaces. I mean, it even makes me shake my head lately. One close immediate family coached there fairly recently - another played there, is an involved letterman - and another lives close to someone, real close, that ... well, it's just worked out that way. I'm blessed when it comes to the Gamecocks I guess.
Then there are the Texas connections ... the other side of the family. I've mentioned those before as well ... without ever knowing this search would come.
So the reason I know are all the above.
The reason I'm sharing a little bit is because I've developed an affection for this group of Gamecocks.
You're the ultimate group of outsiders. You're not FGF turds, you're not Cocky Talk posers. You're not Big Spur groupies. You're ... we're, independents.
I'm getting older ... not old yet, but the day is coming. I'm still, as I have always been, way ahead of the techie curve for my age group ... my demographic if you will. I wanna stay that way, stay sharp, stay involved, in my Gamecock hobby now that my kids are grown and gone and I'm alone most days with the dogs and horses and my fishing boat ... until my wife gets home.
Y'all are going to help me with that. So we have an understood arrangement of sorts I guess.
I know who the shithooks are on the message boards ... who not to trust, who has recently started lurking here, etc. We're. Still relatively unpolluted here ... we're fairly close to be so anonymous.(sp?).
That's how I know.
I know Fuente is #1 ... but he is cold shouldering everyone and doesn't want to talk to anyone until after thus season plays out or ... and this is assumed, until he loses a game.
Herman is the win-win backup plan who is endearing himself to us more and more everyday because it's starting to feel like, to some at least ... like he really wants the job. Wants to bring Texas recruits to SC and combine them with what we have.
Let's hope Georgia doesn't complicate things. The longer they wait the better our position becomes.
Beamer, Rich Rod, Kirby are smoke screens. Part of the game.
As far as the search goes ... never, not ever, have we united our biggest players like this before in terms of contacts and influence. I am absolutely in awe. For the first time in my life we're playing the game like the bug boys play the game .... and it's about fricking time we pull out all the stops.
Mike McGee really taught the important people how, Hyman sorta did it by 2nd nature ... but everyone paid attention and the ones that matter are helping Ray get it done, along with Pastides, who's participation cannot be underestimated in all of this and when is also benefitting from Palms' and Sorenson's examples.
Anyways ... I know. I know more than most, less than some.
I'll share what I can ... but it's wait and see for now. I know I'll be watching the Memphis State and Houston games from here on out though.
I did this entire post half way liqoured-up, hen pecking on my droid, without my good set of glasses which I have misplaced for the moment. So pardon the grammatical, puncuation and spelling errors in advance.

That immediate family member that played at Memphis State ... he actually transferred there. He first signed with Frank Broyles at Arkansas but, married his HS sweetheart, knocked her up on their wedding night, nine months later his first child was born and he decided to transfer to Memphis State to play for Spook Murphy, Ray Malivesi and others who no one here will know about because that was long before they were born.

I think they are 1a and 1b but with Scrooster info about Fuente not talking to us and Herman is it looks as id Herman is our top target.
