We'll do it Mike.

I've got my yearly checkup happening a few days before football season begins. If my heart, liver and kidneys are all still good to go we're going to have to throw a party on my dime.

One of us will be dead at this rate.

Have not looked at next years baseball schedule to see when SC plays UK and VU and where.

Cheese ... we're definitely not coming to the Kentucky game this year buddy. We'll be in Vegas that weekend.

Basketball I'm not sure yet. We're going to A&M for a game, Georgia and Michigan ... and probably Connecticut for a tourney. Not sure Rupp is in the cards for us this year either.

When are you coming down here?

I was down there about a year ago for C of C graduation.

My friends in Charleston are moving away as far to many Yankees for them have moved in in the last decade. They were thinking about GA but same seem to be happening were they were looking.

I am thinking about PR (stuff is cheap now) or some other US protectorate. Spending the end soaking up sun and rum is probably not a bad way to end it in the golden years. Damn south is just infested with Yankees these days.

Costa Rica.

Tons of ex-pats down there. My wife an I bought a nice little piece of property there a few years ago once we knew we were going to put the Oahu condo on the market ... and we 1032'd some or the proceeds from that sale over to the Costa Rican property and actually got a little bit of a tax break because of the area where we invested ... blew my mind given it is not U.S. property.

We're eventually going to build down there I think and habe a sort lf get-away place for the family. My pilot friend and his wife invested in property next to ours and a couple of my old military buddies are already living down there near us as well.

We love it down there. Beats the helloutta Hawaii and it's surprisingly easier to get-to for us. The key is being able to function off grid so we're in the planning stage to go solar, wind and gennie down there. Sure beats the helloutta PR and the DR. Plus, once you get your main shipment of necessities delivered, everything else down there is cheap ... the dollar goes a lonnnnnnng ways.

Family invested in Belize a generation ago (between Depression and WWII)

English protectorate
English speaking

Had good property including waterfront and ruins

About 10 years ago the government "converted" it under government order and then wound up in the hands of the locals. Lesson learned.

Central America looks good early on but the governments may seize your property when you think they will not. Had some close friends with lots of dough settle in Costa Rica in the past 20 years. Looked good early on but now the "American" zone needs local military to protect them. Small lot may be one thing but when buying lots of land...

Buyer beware and all

I do want to chat you up about your prep business. Had some friends about 1 year ago who were interested but never got to meet you when I was in SC last.

Hey rooster, two of my good friends work at the athletic dept at the university and are always with donors like 24/7. I know they’ll be out at the fields with donors tomorrow. Was just curious if you got any Hayden’s or jesse’s as your contact guys. They’re good ppl.

Scrooster,

Any suggestions on standby generators (nat gas or propane) for whole home use?

Looking at future with solar and said backup generator as needed. Even if the solar does not fly, want the standby as power grid seems to have more and more outages and losing 1,000 in meat every 3 to 6 months is not a good way to go.

My name is not SCrooster, but I'm going to chime in anyway.

You will want to talk to an American electrical contractor and even pay him to design it for you. You'll want everything in your home to be UPS backed (Uninteruptible Power Supply = UPS... battery bank).

That battery bank (UPS) is fed from three sources- Solar, Utility, Generator.

The ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) decides what is feeding the UPS at any given time. It is programmed in tiers.... teir 1 is your solar, free power. Tier 2 is utility, not free power. Tier 3 is generator. When the ATS senses lack of solar (cloudy, night time, etc) it autoswitches to utility. When it senses a return of the solar, it switches back to solar. If it loses solar, and utility, it automatically cranks the generator and switches the power source to it. All of this happens without loss of power because of the UPS. Are you with me so far?

You could do all this manually if you want to.. but investing in ATS design does it all for you.

You'll need to swap your batteries every 3-5 years. For residential applications, gel is best, and can last longer.

You'll need to get a fuel plan. If you rarely run the generator(s), the fuel will go bad. Have scheduled fuel swaps if you aren't burning through it regularly.

For details, that's where you want to spend the money for an actual electrical-mechanical engineer to design it. You'll want to do this right before you make the move, because technology is constantly changing. What is best practice today could be outdated and obsolete in five years.

I would be running the standby generator on Nat Gas via line and not propane tank.

The house in GA was mostly solar with line gas for heat and instantaneous hot water heaters (tankless) as electric just does not have the same feel

Gas things that are good (running off gas service)
Grill
Fireplace
Furnace
Tankless hot water heater
Cooktop / Oven

Things good to run off electric
Lights
Electronics
Applainces
Misc
