Please keep this young man in your thoughts and prayers
Lavonte Valentine sent this out on social media last night. There was a message in the replies from the athletic trainers for him to call them immediately bc they had been unable to reach him since seeing the post either by phone or text. I don't pray that much but I am praying hard that he is safe and okay. It breaks my heart into a million pieces to discover that he has tried more than once already to commit suicide. That's a lonely, lonely place to be.

This breaks my heart. I couldn't help but think of Ryan and the Hilinski's when reading it. When you read something like this, I almost automatically wonder about CTE.

I can very much relate to what this young man is feeling. Without going into too much detail, I have fought those demons in my past, when I wasn't much older than this young man. It was a transitory sort of situation, and the world became bright again a relatively short time later. Emotions and feelings still pop up from time to time, but nothing like that one dark episode.

The fortunate side of this is it's a cry for help. Having been there, it's a sign that they aren't ready to give up, and are letting their emotions out. Hopefully, the athletic staff at the college will get him the help he needs.

Ironically, I posted this over on CT yesterday.

quote:

Hayden Hurst has gone to a handful of schools over the past month with an important message."It's OK to not be OK," Hurst tells students.

Good luck young man. Tomorrow is another day. Reach out to those that love you and want to help you.

Hayden and Ryan and a host of others reached out to him last night as well. He hasn't acknowledged anyone. I can't help but to also think, in addition to how hard this is on Lavonte, the memories and feelings this must bring up in Ryan and his family. And of course it makes me think of Kenny. I just want him to be okay. I don't care about the sports aspect of it at all. This is about him, not the athlete.

And I've been there as well. I've talked about it before. After Kyle died I went thru a really dark period and I did attempt suicide. I just wanted the hurting to stop. It took a long time to gain hope and belief that I would be okay and that I was strong enough to survive his death. It's still hard around anniversaries but I take those times day by day; sometimes second by second.

Anyway, I just want Lavonte to be okay. To know he is not alone in this and he has a plethora of people he can lean on and talk to. Hopefully we will hear good news today that they did reach him and are in the process of getting him the help he needs.

So I am out of town and would not have known about this is not for your post CG. Thanks for sharing.

I had heard a couple of months ago that he had some depression and anxiety things going on and that our staff and his roommate are well aware of them and he's being treated for it all through our medical staff.

Pretty sure they've been on the lookout for something like this happening since he arrived. Was told Fenwick has been tuned into this and helping him at times.

Let's all hope everything turns out okay. I can't really relate but I have had friends who have struggled with depression and I understand that it can be debilitating ... a really tough time getting up in the morning and going to sleep at night.

My youngest daughter is a research psychologist and she sort of explained it to me one time, what people go through and the chemical imbalances that spark the manic declines.

We can rest assured that his teammates are supportive of him and we can bet the media are setting-up to do features on him both in print media and TV media (if one of the network sites do not get to it first to set a precedent). So maybe this will all be for a purpose and there will be a happy ending.

I have depression and anxiety myself and totally understand the kid being by himmself. He needs to have people stay around him no matter what. Despair is a horrible feeling and coupled with panic attacks is 10x worse.

I hate that I missed this.

What was the resolution ?

Is the young man okay ?

Depression is a powerful emotion, sometimes you just need friends to talk with.

Hoping for the best here.

I hope things work out well.

When you are aware ( not just sports, any competitive field) of your ability, and injury or other issues hold you back, the depression can become immense.

It appears that this young man must have found someone supportive to talk with. That"s a great thing.
