Missing link on defense- Spur

I came into the season thinking that Golightly was just keeping the Spur seat warm until Diggs learned enough of the playbook to take over the position. I always heard that Diggs was recruited explicitly for the Spur position, and that the position was tailor-made for him.

But then they started talking about Bryant being looked at for the position, and then he was moved there. So I wonder if Diggs is having trouble grasping the position or is struggling in the coverage aspects.

But in either case the Spur is just like the LB position: in 2010 we were thin in depth at LB with Paulk and Wilson being injured, and it hurt our overall defense substantially. But even then we had a young Allen at Spur, and he was one of the top players on D that season being 2nd overall in tackles and having dbl-digit TFL. IMO he was the top "Unsung Hero" that season...

This season, BOTH the Spur and LB positions are inexperienced, and Golightly was initially thought of as mostly being depth for the secondary when he signed, he was so tiny.

I'm hoping that as the season progresses the younger guys start taking bigger roles and settle down at the positions. Only Clemson and Missouri are left on our schedule with top-30 passing offenses: MSU's passing O is tied with ours at 45th, UK's is 58th and UF's is 97th. Arky's is 105th and UT's is 112th. Hopefully our passing defense improves as the season progresses....

I'd like to see him more too. There is no way he could play worse than JJ Marcus or TJ Gurley at strong safety.

I also had forgot that Antonio wasn't our Spur to begin that season: Damario Jeffery started the first 3-4 games of 2010 at Spur, then lost out to Antonio who was out-playing him as his relief. We also had both Culliver and Auguste mis-matched at CB (Culliver) and FS (Auguste), mostly due to Chris having the bum shoulder and couldn't form tackle effectively anymore. He was a more natural (or more experienced) safety, and Auguste a more natural CB.

Then Culliver is lost for the season (more issues with that shoulder), and Auguste goes back to CB, and Swearinger steps up at FS for the first time that season, and our passing defense holds 4 of the final 5 opponents to under 200 passing yds per game, when it was allowing almost 300 ypg prior to that. Hopefully we similarly find the fixes this season and start improving on passing D...

hybrid LB and Safety position. Usually acts as a third Safety, but will come into the box in running situations. It's part of the 4-2-5 base defense we run.

Your ideal spur would be the size of a D1 OLB, 6'2"+ 220+ lbs, but have the speed and agility of a D1 Safety, so runs about a 4.5 forty yard dash or below.

Personally I think either Brison Williams or Gurley needs to play SPUR. Gurley is too slow for safety and Brison seems to have a knack for tackling. This would require Elder or Moody to step up at safety though which is something that may not be possible with their lack of PT already this year saying something
