Does this have any similarities to how 1996 ended? Florida vs. Florida State was the de facto NC game.

The Rose Bowl featured one loss Ohio State and undefeated Arizona State. No matter who won the Rose Bowl, it was a given that the UF/FSU winner would be the unanimous national champion, am I right?

Or did Arizona State have a chance if they finished undefeated? Shine some knowledge for me Gators or others!

All power 5 teams have a shot if undefeated, as they would likely be in the playoffs.

Well, now yes under the current format which allows four teams. But in 1996 it was as if the Pac 10 and Big Ten were irrelevant to the NC picture despite being up there with FSU and UF.

I'm certain no one expected Arizona State to win the Rose Bowl...just like no one really expected Wisconsin to win the Big Ten in the 2017 season. Had Wisconsin beaten Ohio State, they would have been the 4-seed.

Another example: In 1998 during Championship Saturday, it was assumed that Tennessee and Kansas State would be the first BCS Championship Game matchup...until A&M happened. The Big 12 and the Cotton Bowl had already chosen Texas and had to scramble after Kansas State lost, which ended with them falling past the Cotton and Holiday Bowls all the way down to the Alamo Bowl.

I would have loved to have seen that game. KSU was awesome back then. Bill Snyder had it going until Bob Stoops got the OU job and raided his staff. That QB Michael Bishop was fun to watch.
