Was there any real threat of Jimbo leaving anytime soon? Kind of an odd time for an extension/raise if he hasn’t won anything significant yet.

Rumors have been circulating that LSU would make a run at Jimbo if they fired Ed O after this season and A&M isn't going to let that happen. Jimbo could leave for no buyout. A&M was simply unwilling to take that risk of Jimbo breaking through this year and then being lured away, that would be a disaster.

Most of all it's clear he is building a great program based on the Orange Bowl win and the recruiting going next level. He's also a perfect cultural fit at A&M, best since Jackie Sherrill and even better than RC Slocum. A&M has the money and is turning a MASSIVE profit that appears to be only going up as we are cranking out nearly 15k grads per year now. As much as A&M is making now it's likely to increase significantly in the next few years, ESPECIALLY if we actually win the SEC/NC.

The most expensive mistake a school can make is paying a little less for a lesser coach that you end up firing in a few years and paying a buyout to. It's possible of course that could happen with Jimbo but it's unlikely. A&M is also in a position that if that were to happen we could write that big check if need be and still hire a top flight coach. Money has benefits.
