Why?

Because there's an imbalance.
Maybe if the Big 10 can keep it at 18, and the SEC with to be 16, then it won't be inevitable.
But, if they go to 20, the SEC will have to react.
I'd hate it, but you can't have 20, or more, in one conference, and only 16 in the other power conference.

That doesn't mean the SEC should increase their numbers.

Why not?

Again, bigger is not better. Why slice the money pie 20 ways when you can get more money with 16 teams?

We would have to add programs, not just football teams, that would add value in all sports while also opening up television viewership.

Notre Dame is good at practically every sport. Their fanbase is fricking enormous. But they are in Indiana.

Who else moves the needle out there?

North Carolina would be the next program in my opinion. They somewhat fit geographically and their basketball program is an all-timer.

Nobody West of Austin is worth pursuing. We already have South Carolina. Adding Clemson makes no sense. Florida State had an opportunity to join in '92 but they pussed out.

Virginia Tech? Pass.

TCU? Meh.
