I think there was an undefeated BYU team who was named national champs after beating a 6-5 Michigan team in their bowl game.

There were a lot of years with BCS controversy, for whatever reason the train wreck that was 2001 doesn't get talked about a ton. Nebraska lost their last regular season game by 26, didn't play in their conference championship, and somehow got to play for a national title anyway.
Hard to compare to more recent title teams because the eras are pretty different, still contend that Miami team was for sure one of the all-time greats. Only two close games were on the road against two ranked teams, and they absolutely murdered several other ranked teams.
