I wouldn't say Auburn has overachieved or underachieved.
They have great seasons, then absolutely terrible ones. For every amazing team, it's only a couple of years removed from a massive headscratcher of a season.
I'd put Auburn in a Tier 4, the "Roller Coaster" tier, if I were to put them in one at all.

Not too many of those. Only a couple of "terrible" seasons in my 30 years as an Auburn fan and those were 1998 and 2012. Both ended with a coaching change.
Lot's of mediocre seasons though with the occasional great seasons.
