This is not true. Although 22 is also signed as 78 the majority of the old hwy is still there and is resigned as AL 118 and from Guin to Hamilton as US 43/278.

Um, bad news, but the plans for I-22 directly states that it will "parallel or overlay US-78 for it's entire duration.

As stated in the linked article, some parts of the old roadway was intended to be renumbered and placed in use as alternate routes and some decommissioned.

It almost went through Huntsville. If that had happened, US-72 would have been converted to interstate.
