In about 1975, Fairhope high school, Alabama, was playing a play-off game against a Mobile team, maybe Murphy, in Ladd Stadium in Mobile. The star Fairhope player was the QB who also played Safety.
In the first half he intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD. In the second half late in game he intercepted another pass and was returning it, weaving into the clear after 30 yards, possibly heading for a go-ahead TD when an opposing player came off the sidelines and tackled him (hurting Fairhope’s star 2-way lineman on play).
The Mobile refs called a 15 yd penalty at point of foul and Fairhope failed to score, lost game by 6 pts.
I drove back to Fairhope with some really angry people.
